The Kresge Foundation, which promotes the well-being of mankind, is expanding into a 17,000 square foot green headquarters on a 3-acre site in Troy, Michigan. The new building and site provide natural light, clean air, and a strong visual and visceral connection to a living environment of water and plant life from the building interior. The historic fieldstone farmhouse and agricultural structures were integrated into the site landscape design, a series of naturalized plantings that evoke the Midwestern prairie and wetland. Rainwater is captured by the landscape, a green roof, and porous paving technology integrated into the parking lot. Surplus water is collected and re-circulated for green roof irrigation. This project is designed to attain a platinum LEED rating.
"I love the way the green roof looks in the snow, or seeing foxes or herons from our conference rooms during a
meeting. As a major funder of environmental programs, we are living the world we hope to help to
create."
