Iowa Green Streets

In 2008, the City of West Union, Iowa began a partnership with the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) to serve as a demonstration for the Green Communities program. Conservation Design Forum led a Visioning Workshop to transition West Union into the sustainable community it wishes to become. The Visioning Plan will guide a renaissance of the downtown district and neighborhoods and serve as a model for other communities as to how sustainable green infrastructure enriches a community. When fully implemented, the plan will include an Art Walk, Performance Pavilion on the historic Courthouse lawn, and geothermal heating of hardscapes allowing snow melt. It will also include permeable pavement and green roof systems, rain gardens, a harvested rain water system and solar powered lighting. Ultimately, the Vision Plan will create safer inviting spaces; encourage alternative transportation; promote physical activity; create opportunities for socialization; and provide an authentic experience that promotes economic development.
