Chicago's Wild Places Featured in New Book

My Journey into the Wilds of Chicago book jacket cropped

Nature photographer Mike MacDonald has come out with a new coffee table book which portrays the rustic and wild lands that still exist in and around the City of Chicago. According to MacDonald, there are over 350 square miles of natural areas in the Chicago vicinity.

"From the tall grass prairies to rare oak savannas, local photographer and humorist Mike MacDonald has captured the stunning beauty of the Chicago area in his new coffee table book, My Journey Into the Wilds of Chicago: A Celebration of Chicagoland's Startling Natural WondersThe book features more than 200 landscape photographs and nearly two dozen essays and poems written by MacDonald about Chicago's wild side, ranging in geography from the lakefront to prairie lands just north of the border, to Kankakee, Lockport, Batavia and McHenry County." (this text originally appeared on the WTTW website)

Lockport Prairie photo by Mike MacDonaldA number of the locations depicted in the book are preserves and public lands that CDF has studied and consulted on over the years. Our involvement varied by the site, but ranged from natural features inventory work to the development of long-term management and stewardship plans, to overseeing on-site restoration, and conducting long-term monitoring. Those sites, such as Lockport Prairie (image on left) and others from the list below, are portrayed in stunning imagery by Mike MacDonald.
