Biographical Narrative by James Patchett
Dave and I have been close friends since our days as college roommates. One aspect that is often lacking in the establishment and operation of design and engineering firms relates to the need for sound business and financial management. It is an unfortunate fact that most classically trained architects, landscape architects, ecologists, engineers, and planners, while possibly very gifted within the range of their core training and life experience, often lack training in business and financial management practices.
Dave’s training and experience is in the area of business management and accounting. After nearly 25 years of employment in the health care industry, which included all facets of corporate accounting and financial management, I persuaded Dave, through repeated begging I might add, to join us at CDF. He gave up the stability of a longtime relationship in an industry that he knew intimately, and joined a group of idealistic practitioners in a whole different world of business. Thank goodness he did.
Dave quickly set up and maintains a business and financial accounting methodology that facilitates the accurate and efficient tracking of all aspects of the company’s performance. Furthermore, he has the personal and professional attitude that no job is too big or too small, which often translates into taking care of every little thing that needs attention in the office. He couples that attitude with a supportive and casual demeanor that personifies a disciplined work ethic with the ability to make it fun for all of his colleagues.
