The 1,500 acre Millennium Park is located at the nexus of four growing southwestern Michigan municipalities. CDF was selected by Kent County to lead the master plan update and create a vision for future park development commensurate with the County's commitment to the environment. CDF created a long-term plan where water is a central theme, building upon the park's water resources: over four miles of Grand River shoreline, numerous lakes and wetlands, and two streams. During the natural areas assessment, CDF discovered several exceedingly rare habitat zones with high quality native landscapes. In prior plans these areas had gone unnoticed. Various programs, such as "The Fen," are located in conjunction with these rare landscapes allowing for protection as well as interpretation. The Plan identified specific restoration strategies for the remnants, and recommended that nearly the entire park be restored with native landscape systems. The Plan also identified over 20 miles of proposed trails expanding opportunities for passive recreation.
